Recruitment of Principal Investigators in Cancer Research

Gustave Roussy and its Foundation are currently seeking applications from both early-career and senior scientists in the field of cancer research. Located just south of Paris and easily accessible by subway, Gustave Roussy is one of Europe’s leading cancer centers and is currently ranked the 4th best cancer hospital in the world by Newsweek.

With a workforce of around 4,000 employees, Gustave Roussy includes a dedicated research division comprising 1,400 staff members across clinical, translational, and basic science research. The scientific strategy emphasizes integration between multi-scale analyses of patient-derived samples and experimental biology.

The clinical research division enrolls approximately 6,000 patients annually in clinical trials. In addition to large-scale trials evaluating new treatment strategies, the center runs innovative programs that generate highquality biospecimens and data for translational research. For example, the UNLOCK program collects samples before, during, and after administration of innovative therapies to study mechanisms of action and resistance (Mosele, Nat Med, 2023). Other ongoing initiatives include a large database of more than 400,000 patients, and large prospective biobanking efforts in high-risk populations, breast cancer (14,000 patients), and immunotherapytreated patients (1,000 patients), among others.

The translational and basic science division currently hosts 43 research teams, with plans to expand to 60 teams by 2030. Apart from clinical teams directly supported by Gustave Roussy, most research teams are organized into thematic units co-sponsored by Gustave Roussy, Inserm or CNRS, and Université Paris-Saclay. These teams cover a broad range of cancer biology hallmarks and also include groups focused on epidemiology (2 teams), survivorship (1 team), data science (4 teams), and imaging (1 team). In addition to independent research, teams may participate in internal programs—31 of which are currently funded with over €5 million each in combined internal and external support.

Gustave Roussy has a strong track record of scientific contributions, including the discovery of LAG3 (Triebel, J Exp Med, 1990), JAK2 and TET2 mutations (James, Nature, 2005; Delhommeau, NEJM, 2006), and key insights into the role of the microbiome in cancer (Routy, Science, 2018). Research activities are conducted across 22,000 sqm of facilities on campus, with a new 33,000 sqm research building scheduled for completion in 2028.

Technology transfer is managed by Gustave Roussy Transfert, and entrepreneurship is supported through a strategic partnership with Sofinnova, which provides funding and operational support for start-up creation. These ventures are incubated within the Paris Saclay Cancer Cluster—a 100,000 sqm innovation district located on the same campus and dedicated to cancer and supported by the French government.

Principal Investigator positions can be accessed through multiple pathways:

  • Foundation Chairs: The Gustave Roussy Foundation offers competitive Chair positions with attractive salaries and starting packages. Candidates are evaluated by an independent committee including external experts and a member of the Gustave Roussy Scientific Advisory Board. Positions are awarded for an initial five-year term, renewable. Salary ranges and start-up package details are available upon request.
  • National Research Agencies: Candidates may apply for permanent research positions through Inserm or CNRS. Gustave Roussy may offer salary supplements for investigators involved in hospital-linked activities, subject to agency approval.
  • University Positions: Appointments may also be made through Université Paris-Saclay, ranked 13th globally in the Shanghai Ranking.

All applicants will receive support from the Gustave Roussy Grant Office for proposal development and funding applications.
